The 2027 Lagos State governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Eng. Adesoca Sol-Nuyi has said that his administration will implement practical, engineering-driven solutions that permanently reduce flooding across the State.
In a statement issued on Monday, Sol-Nuyi noted that “Truly flooding in Lagos is not inevitable, it’s the result of years of poor planning, weak enforcement of environmental laws, inadequate infrastructure and the absence of a long-term development strategy.
According to Eng Sol-Nuyi, “One of the major contributors to flooding in Lagos is the indiscriminate waste disposal, blocking drainage channels, as a result of an inefficient waste management system and weak enforcement.
“AAC administration will strengthen anti-dumping laws and ensure they are enforced fairly and consistently. We will significantly improve waste collection and establish properly managed collection points within the communities. Every neighbourhood in the State will have accessible locations where residents can dispose of waste safely, ensuring refuse no longer finds its way into our drainage channels across the state.
“We will also expand recycling programmes and public sanitation campaigns. Environmental education will become a continuous exercise in the State, so that every Lagos resident understands that protecting our environment is a shared responsibility.
“Lagos possesses an extensive network of canals, rivers, and waterways. Rather than allowing these channels to deteriorate, we will rehabilitate and integrate them into a modern flood management system. We will dredge canals regularly, remove accumulated silt, clear invasive vegetation, and restore natural waterways to improve water flow.”
He added, Engineering principles teach that increasing the capacity and efficiency of water channels improves flow rates and significantly reduces flooding.
Eng. Sol-Nuyi noted that Communities such as Victoria Island, Lekki, Lagos Island, Mile 12, Maidan-Orile, Ikorodu, and other flood-prone areas require specialised flood protection measures.
“Where necessary, we will construct sea walls, restore natural mangrove forests, and develop modern tidal barriers to protect vulnerable coastal communities from tidal surges and rising sea levels.
“Nature itself provides some of the best flood protection. Healthy mangrove ecosystems absorb wave energy, reduce coastal erosion, and minimise flooding. Our government will protect and restore these valuable natural assets.
“Instead of allowing stormwater to overwhelm our roads, we will construct retention ponds and stormwater reservoirs that temporarily store excess rainwater during heavy rainfall.”
He also noted that our government will develop floodable parks and green spaces that safely accommodate excess water during storms while serving as recreational facilities during dry periods.
He said: “My government will deploy rainfall monitoring equipment, water-level sensors, and real-time flood warning systems across Lagos; we will map flood-prone areas, monitor drainage performance, and improve emergency response planning.
“Technology will become an essential tool in protecting lives and property during our administration.”
On the part of the residents, he said they will be educated on proper waste disposal, environmental protection, and flood prevention across Lagos State.
Eng, Sol-Nuyi said, community volunteers will receive training on emergency response and environmental sanitation, creating stronger partnerships between government and citizens.
