Former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Dr. George Moghalu, has congratulated Nigerians on the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary, urging citizens to renew their faith in the country and recommit themselves to national unity, peace and development.
Moghalu said the anniversary should serve not only as a celebration of Nigeria’s independence but also as an opportunity for reflection on the country’s journey, the sacrifices of its founding fathers and the collective responsibility of citizens in nation-building.
In a goodwill message issued on Thursday in Abuja, the former NIWA boss described Nigeria as a nation blessed with enormous human and natural resources, noting that despite prevailing challenges, the country still possesses immense potential for greatness.
He said Nigerians are widely recognised for their resilience, enterprise and ability to excel under difficult circumstances, stressing that the nation’s current challenges should inspire greater determination to build a prosperous and united country rather than breed despair.
According to him, “Nigeria belongs to all of us, and the responsibility to make it work also belongs to all of us.”
Moghalu called for purposeful leadership and responsible citizenship, emphasizing the need for adherence to the rule of law, justice, equity and equal opportunities for all Nigerians.
He maintained that meaningful national transformation can only be achieved through unity of purpose and a sincere commitment to the common good.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Moghalu urged political leaders and citizens to embrace issue-based campaigns, peaceful democratic participation and responsible political engagement.
He appealed to Nigerians to place national interest above ethnic, religious, personal and partisan considerations, adding that strengthening democratic institutions and protecting national unity remain critical to the country’s progress.
The former NIWA chief expressed optimism that the Nigeria of citizens’ aspirations remains attainable if leaders and the people collectively choose service over self-interest, unity over division and nation-building over personal gain.
He also prayed for God’s continued guidance, protection and blessings upon Nigeria, while paying tribute to the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes past.
Moghalu wished Nigerians a happy 66th Independence Anniversary and urged them to celebrate the occasion with renewed hope and confidence in the country’s future.
